Earth and Space

What can we depend on?

In a turbulent world full of unknowns, what can we depend on and draw strength from anytime, anywhere?

The answer might be different for each of us, but for myself, I have learned to seek support and inspiration from the earth below and vastness above.

These are quite literally the primary media through which all movement and bodily existence takes place. We are constantly relating to gravity by pushing away from it or yielding into it, with every step we take—and with every other physical movement, for that matter. In our embodied reality, gravity is a constant, and it is possible to form a relationship with it that can be a source of pleasure, comfort, and nurturance. How do we form this relationship? By yielding to the earth’s pull and receiving what she offers in return.

Just as trees send their roots down in order to reach toward the vast sky above, we can do that too. Rooting down, we can extend ourselves out and up. The space around us provides us the freedom to move and to reach toward the infinite. The infinite is a source of possibility—the liberation of constraint and confinement.

All of that infinitude is almost too much for the human mind to comprehend, but we can form a relationship with it if simultaneously keep rooted to the stability of earth below. In this practice, we do both.

Though this practice does involve some gentle movement, it’s mostly seated and relatively still (although feel free to rock, wiggle, and move throughout!)… so if you have a lot of trapped energy flowing through your body and making things feel wonky today, it may feel supportive to do some additional gentle movement before getting started. Trust your gut.

May we all find ways to tap into the inexhaustible sources of energy that are hiding in plain sight, and may we find refuge and replenishment there. The road ahead is long, but together we will prevail.

With care,
Elena
