Self-massage to the dome

Scalp, ears, face, and jaw-- let's release them all!

Who among us could not benefit from a scalp massage? This is a practice for all of us.

However, if you are someone who does a lot of fawning, this massage might feel extra juicy.

Not familiar with the fawn response? Fawning is essentially people pleasing to the extreme. Unlike fight or flight, which are active strategies for self defense, fawning is a technique that helps us stay safe by soothing, pacifying, and appearing non-threatening to those around us. For some of us, it becomes a deeply embedded habit that takes conscious effort to shift.

However, it also takes a lot of physical effort to maintain. Those of us with a propensity for fawning tend to hold a lot of tension in our faces when we plaster on a smile when we really want to scowl; or when we hold back all the things we really want to say by only chiming in with what we sense will be most palatable.

Of course, we all have to bite our tongues and be polite sometimes, in the name of social acceptability. But with fawning, the tendency to people please becomes an extreme sport, creating a lot of tension in our facial muscles.

So, whether or not you’re a fawner, let’s release some of that tension here today. I hope this practice leaves you feeling relaxed and more at ease. It’s amazing how much just focusing our attention on our heads can impact the feeling of our entire body. It’s all connected!

With care,
Elena
